TRITON TRIO GARNERS ALL-BIG WEST RECOGNITION
Three UC San Diego men's volleyball players have earned All-Big West recognition as the conference released its annual honorees Wednesday.
Senior opposite hitter
Anthony Cherfan and grad student setter
Bryce Dvorak were selected to the All-Big West First Team, while junior outside hitter
Josh Schellinger garnered Honorable Mention accolades from the conference.
Cherfan is the team leader in points, kills, and attack percentage. He ranks second in service aces, third in blocks, and fifth in digs. Among Big West players in conference matches, Cherfan ranked third in kills per set and seventh in aces per set. He registered a double-figure kill total in 17 matches, which included a career-high 27 against Loyola Chicago. Cherfan has won several other awards this season including Big West Offensive Player of the Week and Big West Defensive Player of the Week. He was a member of the 2025 Big West Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Los Angeles native was an All-Big West First Team performer and an AVCA All-America Honorable Mention selection in 2024 as well.
"Anthony's growth and progression as a player has been fantastic over the past two years," said head coach
Brad Rostratter. "He found more offensive consistency and has maintained high level volleyball throughout the season."
Dvorak arrived at UC San Diego this season after playing for Pepperdine. As the Tritons' primary setter, he led the Big West in total assists and assists per set. He has racked up 1,072 helpers to pace the team to its current .311 attack percentage. Dvorak assisted on a season-high 65 kills against CSUN in early April. He also finished eighth in the conference in aces. In his second-ever match as a Triton in January, he put down seven aces against Saint Francis to establish a new UC San Diego program record.
"An immediate impact on and off the court came with Bryce's arrival," said Rostratter. "It has shown with his serving, setting, and overall volleyball skill set."
Schellinger also had a stellar season, setting multiple career highs including 19 kills and 21.5 points vs. Loyola Chicago. He also established career best numbers in assists, aces, digs, and attack percentage. Schellinger had 16 matches with at least 10 kills. In Big West matches, he ranked seventh in kills per set and eighth in attack percentage.
"As a server, passer, and attacker Josh has consistently been doing more and more of what is needed to perform at a high level," said Rostratter. "His development is a testament to his energetic work ethic that he brings to everything he does."
TRITONS DOUBLE UP ON BIG WEST WEEKLY AWARDS
Two Tritons earned Big West weekly awards on Monday, April 7, as senior opposite
Anthony Cherfan was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week and grad student
Bryce Dvorak was the Setter of the Week. The duo helped the Tritons go 1-1 against fourth-ranked UC Irvine in conference matches.
Over seven sets, Cherfan led the Tritons with 32 kills (4.57/set) while hitting .385. His 35 points were also a team best. In addition, he also totaled nine digs, four blocks and one service ace. In a 3-1 home win against the Anteaters, Cherfan led all players with 20 kills while hitting .386 and adding six digs and three blocks. In a 3-0 loss at UC Irvine, he led all Tritons with 12 kills while hitting .381. The Los Angeles native also contributed three digs, a block, and an ace. It is the second Big West weekly honor drawn by Cherfan this season as he won Defensive Player of the Week back in early January.
Dvorak totaled 94 assists (13.43/set) and paced UC San Diego to a .395 attack over the two contests. He also added two kills, three aces, eight digs, and two blocks. In the win over UCI in La Jolla, the grad student had 60 assists while adding seven digs, two aces, and a block. In the loss, he dished out another 34 assists as the team hit .373. He also chipped in two kills, an ace, a dig, and a block. It is the first conference award for Dvorak as a Triton.

ACE FREELY
Bryce Dvorak wasted no time putting his name in the UC San Diego Men's Volleyball record book. The grad student setter was able to floor seven service aces Jan. 8 in a sweep of Saint Francis in La Jolla. That total is the most by a Triton during the team's NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II era (since 2001). Dvorak had four aces in the first set, one in set two, and two in set three (the final two points of the match). Teammate
Anthony Cherfan was the previous record holder as he had six aces against USC in 2024.
BROOMTOWN
UC San Diego kicked off its 2025 campaign with four-straight sweeps, the first time the Tritons have accomplished that as an NCAA Division I/II team (since 2001). The last time the team opened its season 4-0 was in 1989.
CHERFAN SELECTED TO BIG WEST COACHES' PRESEASON TEAM
Senior opposite hitter
Anthony Cherfan earned a spot on the 2025 Big West Coaches' Preseason Team. In 2024, he was named AVCA All-America Honorable Mention as well as All-Big West First Team. He led the Tritons in kills (279), kills/set (3.13), points (348), points/set (3.91), service aces (37), and service aces/set (0.24). He was third on the team in blocks (61). Cherfan registered a double-figure kill total in 17 matches, including eight of his final nine outings. He put down a career-best 17 kills in late January in a five-set win against USC. His six service aces in that victory were the most by a Triton since 2006. In Big West matches, Cherfan ranked high among conference players as well, finishing fourth in kills, fifth in points and aces, 10th in hitting percentage, and 13th in blocks.

HEAD COACH BRAD ROSTRATTER
Brad Rostratter enters his third season leading UC San Diego in 2025. He was named head coach of the men's volleyball program on October 7, 2022. Rostratter earned his first career win with the Tritons on Jan. 5, 2023, when the team defeated Lincoln Memorial in five sets at UC Santa Barbara's Asics Invitational. It was the team's season opener. Rostratter collected his first Big West victory on the road at CSUN when the Tritons swept the Matadors on March 16. A National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Coach of the Year and two-time Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Coach of the Year, Rostratter came to La Jolla from Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, Calif., where he served as the men's volleyball head coach since the program's inception in 2019. He led the Lions to a pair of GSAC regular season titles, a league tournament title, and two appearances at the NAIA National Tournament.

WHY THE TRITONS?
The Triton is described as the offspring of Poseidon and Amphitrite, a demigod of the sea with a lower part of the body like that of a fish. It is known as a mighty and fierce sea warrior. Given UC San Diego's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its connections with the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Triton became our mascot in 1964.
NCAA MEN'S VOLLEYBALL LANDSCAPE
The NCAA combines Division I and Division II teams into a single national championship (National Collegiate Championship), while Division III squads have a stand-alone championship (NCAA Division III National Championship). There are 61 Division I and Division II teams combined, with 53 of those making up eight conferences. Another eight institutions are independent.
