SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 13 UC San Diego men's volleyball team won its 2025 Big West opener Friday, beating No. 17 UC Santa Barbara, 3-1, on the road.
Set scores from the Thunderdome went 25-22, 25-17, 20-25, and 25-20 in favor of the Tritons.
UC San Diego improved to 14-4 overall and 1-0 in Big West action. UCSB is now 8-9 and 0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego out-hit UC Santa Barbara, .257 to .223 and held a substantial 12-4 lead in blocks.
Individually, Josh Schellinger led the Tritons with 12 kills. He also added six blocks, three digs, and a pair of service aces. Peter Selcho had nine kills and hit .500 with two errors in 14 attack attempts. Michael Robertson and Nick Rigo put down eight kills apiece with Rigo hitting .571 with no errors in his 14 attack attempts. Rigo led all players with nine blocks (one solo). Setter Bryce Dvorak racked up 36 assists plus four kills, six digs, and two blocks. Sebastian Lara and Michael Robertson each had seven digs each.
For the Gauchos, Owen Loncar put down a team-high 11 kills. Jack Walmer led all players with eight digs. Five different Gauchos had one aces.
