Tritons Take a Set but Fall in Four at Hawai‘i

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Three players put down a double-digit kill total but it wasn't enough as UC San Diego lost in four sets at No. 4 Hawai'i Saturday night in Big West Men's Volleyball action.

Set scores from the Stan Sheriff Center were 27-25, 25-23, 17-25, and 25-18 in favor of the Rainbow Warriors.

 UC San Diego fell to 16-6 overall and 2-2 in conference action, while Hawai'i upped its marks to 21-2 on the season and 4-0 in the Big West.

UC San Diego is ranked 11th and Hawai'i is No. 4 in the latest national poll.


HOW IT HAPPENED
For the second-straight night the Rainbow Warriors put out a solid attack and finished with a .390 hitting percentage. The Tritons came in at .264.

Outside hitter Josh Schellinger had a match-high 18 kills for UC San Diego. Opposite Anthony Cherfan and outside Leo Pravednikov each had 13 kills.

The Tritons held an 8-3 advantage in service aces with Cherfan, setter Blake Dvorak, and middle Nick Rigo flooring two apiece.

The Warriors were paced on offense by Louis Sakanoko, who had 15 kills. Adrien Roure was just behind with 14. Kurt Nusterer hit .727 with eight kills and no errors in 11 attack attempts. Ofeck Hazan compiled a .600 attack with seven kills and one error in 10 swings.


UP NEXT
The Tritons return to the mainland and will play a pair against Big West opponent UC Irvine. The Tritons host the Anteaters on April 4 (7 p.m.) before the action moves to Orange County on April 5 (6 p.m.).
