Tritons Roll Past Vanguard

LA JOLLA, Calif. – A season-high attack percentage led the 12th-ranked UC San Diego Men's Volleyball Team to a 3-0 sweep against Vanguard Friday night at LionTree Arena.

Scores were 25-13, 25-14, and 25-18.

With the victory, UC San Diego now stands at 7-1 on the season. Vanguard fell to 1-1 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego's offense was potent throughout the entire match. Overall, the Tritons hit .543 with 43 kills and just five errors in 70 attack attempts. They hit over .600 in sets one and two and compiled a .348 in the third.

Vanguard countered with just a .139 attack (23-13-72). The best set for the Lions was the second when they hit .200.

The Tritons held major advantages in several other categories including kills (43-23), aces (8-2), and digs (31-17).

Ten different Tritons had at least one kill with nine of the 10 putting away multiple kills. Josh Schellinger led all players with 10, the lone double-digit total of the match. He hit .667 with no errors in 15 swings. Anthony Cherfan also finished with no errors and hit .583 (7-0-12).

Bryce Dvorak paced the offense with 31 assists. He also contributed three aces, three digs, and a block. Three of his four attacks went down for kills.

At the net, Cherfan, Jim Garrison, and Leo Wiemelt had two blocks each.

Libero Keegan Cook accumulated 11 digs, a match-best.

Micah Sybesma had seven kills to lead Vanguard. Logan Freemon followed with six. Grant Dvorak, Freemon, and Sean Nguyen each had four digs.

• The Tritons' previous season-high attack percentage was .439 (32-7-57) against Saint Francis on Jan. 8.
• There were three players with the last name Dvorak on the floor - Triton Bryce Dvorak plus Lions Grant and Nick. Bryce and Grant are brothers while Nick is not related.
• UC San Diego head coach Brad Rostratter launched Vanguard's men's volleyball program in 2019.
• The Tritons and Lions meet again on Feb. 7 at Vanguard, located in Costa Mesa, Calif.
• The UC San Diego men's volleyball team that won a national title in 2000 was recognized on the 25th anniversary.
