Tritons Swept in First of Two at No. 4 Hawai‘i

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - For the first time this season the No. 11 UC San Diego men's volleyball team was swept by an opponent, dropping a 3-0 decision at fourth-ranked Hawai'i Friday night.

Set scores were 25-21, 25-21, and 25-18 in the Big West contest at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The loss snapped a seven match win streak for the Tritons, who fell to 16-5 overall and 2-1 in conference action.

The Rainbow Warriors improved to 20-2 on the season and 3-0 in the Big West.


HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego was out-hit by its opponent. Hawai'i finished at .326 (44-14-92) while the Tritons attacked at .181 (31-16-83), their lowest percentage of the year. UC San Diego has out-hit its opponent in 17 of 21 matches.

Hawai'i also held advantages in kills (44-31), aces (6-1), assists (40-30), and digs (33-26). Both teams finished with seven blocks.

The Tritons were led by opposite Anthony Cherfan, who racked up a team-best 13 kills to go along with five digs and three blocks. He took a match-high 33 swings and hit .212.

Middle blocker Nick Rigo finished with five blocks, three kills, and three digs.

Setter Bryce Dvorak had a match-best nine digs while assisting on 29 kills.

Hawai'i got a match-high 16 kills from Kristian Titriyski and Louis Sakanoto added 13. Adrian Roure had four blocks and seven digs.


UP NEXT
The two teams go at it again Saturday at 10 p.m. Pacific in Honolulu. 

The Tritons' next home match will be against UC Irvine on April 4 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available through the Triton Box Office.
