LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego baseball team took both games of a doubleheader against Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday afternoon, clinching one of four spots in next week's CCAA Tournament at Cal State L.A. UCSD won the first game 9-2 as Jon Durket (3-1) went five innings for the win. T.C. Geach pitched the final four innings of scoreless ball to record the save. In game two, UCSD used a seven-run sixth to put the game away as the Tritons won 10-1. Matt Cantele and Scott Clement homered in games one and two, respectively, adding to the Tritons' team record of 57 team homeruns this year. UCSD and CSUMB return to the field on Sunday with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m. UCSD will honor its eight seniors before first pitch in the Senior Day game.
Game One
With one out in the bottom of the first, Matt Cantele homered to right field to put UCSD up 1-0.
In the UCSD second, David Gomez led off with a single through the right side. Garrett Imeson then tripled to right center, scoring Gomez. Jonathan Erickson then grounded out to shortstop, scoring Imeson and UCSD went ahead 3-0. With two outs, Josh Tanner doubled down the right field line. Damian Fante then extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an RBI single through the left side and UCSD led 4-0.
In the UCSD fourth, Bryan Silverman was hit and stole second base. Tanner then sac bunted Silverman to third. Fante then doubled down the left field line for an RBI and put UCSD up 5-0. Cantele then doubled to right field, scoring Fante as the Tritons led 6-0. Scott Clement singled up the middle, driving in Cantele and put UCSD up 7-0. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jonathan Erickson and Silverman hit back-to-back singles for RBI's and UCSD led 9-0.
With one out in the CSUMB fifth, Gerald Rommel doubled to left field, scoring two to put the Otters on the board, trailing 9-2.
Jon Durket earned the win and T.C. Geach pitched the final four scoreless innings for the save.
Game Two
Fante led off the second game with a single to right field, extending his hitting streak to 15 games. A double play erased the runner. With two outs, Scott Clement homered to left field, his 14th of the season, to put UCSD on top 1-0.
CSUMB put two on with one out in the second. Trevor Decker then struck out the next batter and ended the inning on a fly ball to right field as UCSD remained on top 1-0.
In the UCSD third with two outs, Clement lined a single to left field and advanced to third on a miss play in the outfield. David Morehead then came through with a two-out RBI single to center field for the 2-0 UCSD lead. Morehead stole second and third and would come around to score on Imeson's two- out single as UCSD went ahead 3-0 through three.
In the CSUMB fourth, Gerald Rommel led off with a double to left field. Decker retired the next three batters without damage as UCSD remained ahead 3-0.
With one out in the CSUMB sixth, Rommel singled and a UCSD error put two runners on. Zaballos then doubled to right center, scoring one, to bring CSUMB within 3-1 with runners on second and third. Byron Grubman then came on in relief to retire the next two CSUMB batters on two pitches, with two flyouts to left field.
John Roth was hit, leading off the UCSD sixth and advanced to second on Erickson's sac bunt. Tanner then singled to right center, giving the Tritons the 4-1 edge. Fante singled through the left side to put two runners on. Tim Mort singled to center, driving in Tanner and Fante advancing to third. UCSD led 5-1. A wild pitch allowed Fante to cross the plate and UCSD led 6-1. On a hit-and-run play, Clement singled through the right side for an RBI to push UCSD ahead 7-1. David Morehead was hit and Imeson singled, driving in Clement to put UCSD up 8-1. With two outs, Roth sinlged through the right side to drive in two RBI to put UCSD up 10-1.
