SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team swept a doubleheader against San Francisco State on Saturday afternoon in San Francisco. In game one, UCSD led 9-2 in the eighth inning and withstood a Gator rally and held on for the 9-7 win. Scott Clement went 4-for-4, while four other Tritons had multi-hit games. Garrett Imeson homered and had three RBI in the win. In game two, Trevor Decker pitched a complete-game as UCSD topped SFSU 5-3. UCSD improves to 29-22, 18-13 CCAA while the Gators drop to 19-27-2, 8-20-1 CCAA).
With the Tritons leading 5-2 in through seven innings, UCSD scored four times in the eighth inning, in what turned out to be much needed insurance runs. Josh Tanner scored on a wild pitch and Imeson hit a three-run homerun to clear the bases and put UCSD up 9-2.
A UCSD error in the SFSU eighth led to four unearned runs but the Tritons maintained the lead 9-7 through eight.
With Byron Grubman on the mound in the ninth, the first two SFSU batters reached, pressing UCSD. The next SFSU batter fouled out and then the Gators hit into a game-ending 5-4-3 double play.
Jon Durket earned the win (2-1) and Grubman earned the save (3).
In game two, Decker (6-5) went the distance, scattering six hits and allowing three runs. In the key, three-run fifth for UCSD, Damian Fante had an RBI triple and David Gomez had an RBI single to right center.
UCSD is back in action with a single game on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch in San Francisco.
