The UC San Diego baseball team scored 11 times in the first three innings and held on to defeat San Francisco State 13-9 on Friday afternoon in San Francisco.
Matt Cantele had an impressive day, going 4-for-6 with two doubles, a homerun and four RBI. His homerun was his 10th of the season, making it the first time in UCSD Baseball history to have three players on the same team with 10 or more homeruns (Scott Clement and
David Morehead form the last two-thirds of the trio in 2006).
Jonathan Erickson also homered for UCSD, part of his two hit and three RBI afternoon. UCSD improves to 27-22, 16-13 CCAA while the Gators drop to 19-25-2, 8-18-1.
Joining Cantele and Erickson with multi-hit afternoons was Scott Clement with his 3-for-6, David Gomez with his 2-for-5 and Damian Fante, going 4-for-5 and crossing home plate four times. T.C. Geach earned the win pitching 5.2 innings, allowing two runs, none earned to improve to 4-2. Byron Grubman earned the save by recording the final three outs.
UCSD and SFSU take the field on Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch of the first game is slated for 12:00 p.m. in San Francisco.
