SAN BERNARDINO, Calif -The UC San Diego baseball team led Cal State L.A. in the ninth-inning but gave up a seven spot and lost 14-9 to the Golden Eagles at the Cal State San Bernardino Tournament. David Morehead and Jonathan Erickson homered for UCSD, while Erickson also drove in three RBI. Erickson, Matt Lawson and Damian Fante had two hits apiece. There were six lead changes in the back-and-forth, three hour and fifty-six minute game.
Tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the eighth, David Gomez walked and Lawson singled to put runners on the corners. Morehead was hit-by-pitch, loading the bases for Erickson who singled to leftcenter, scoring Gomez and Lawson. Fante then grounded out, Chris Hom lined out to shortstop and Josh Tanner grounded out to firstbase, ending the inning with UCSD ahead 9-7.
The top of the ninth was not kind to UCSD as the first three CSULA batsmen reached base on a single, a walk and hit batsman. The next batter tripled, clearing the bases and giving the lead back to Cal State L.A. 10-9. The Golden Eagles would tack on four more runs in the inning as Cal State L.A. picked-up the victory.
UCSD is back in action on Saturday at the CSUSB tournament against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3:00 p.m.
