Triton Tuesday: National Championships

Every day is a good day to learn more about UC San Diego, but we've chosen a particular one to spread knowledge with our feature called "Triton Tuesday." Each Tuesday, get the inside scoop with fun facts about Triton athletics, the UC San Diego campus and community, and our beautiful home of San Diego, California, in a Did You Know? format.

It's what every NCAA scholar-athlete across the nation dreams of winning: the NCAA National Championship. Throughout UC San Diego's history, teams have brought home the treasured hardware on 30 occasions. Today, we dive into the details of those national titles.

Home Sweet Home
The Tritons have claimed the national crown at home in La Jolla on seven occasions (1988 women's volleyball, 1989 women's soccer, 1991 women's water polo, 1991 men's soccer, 1993 men's golf, 1997 women's volleyball, and 2001 women's soccer).

It was a particularly special year for UC San Diego in 1991, which was the only instance that two teams won the national title in La Jolla during the same academic year (women's water polo and men's soccer).

Location, Location, Location
UC San Diego's national championship victories have come in 12 different states (California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Virginia).

The Golden State has seen the most Triton success of any state, with UC San Diego claiming nine national crowns in California. Coming in behind California are Michigan and Massachusetts, as the Tritons have won four titles in each of those states.

Sport Breakdown
Women's soccer and women's volleyball lead the way for UC San Diego with seven national titles apiece. Eight Triton teams have fought their way to the top over the years.

Women's Soccer: 7 (1989, 95, 96, 97, 99, 2000, 01)
Women's Volleyball: 7 (1981, 84, 86, 87, 88, 90, 97)
Women's Water Polo: 5 (1986, 90, 91, 92, 94)
Women's Tennis: 4 (1985, 87, 89, 94)
Men's Soccer: 3 (1988, 91, 93)
Men's Volleyball: 2 (1970, 2000)
Men's Golf: 1 (1993)
Softball: 1 (2011)

Runner-Up Rivalries
There are four teams that UC San Diego has defeated in a national championship competition multiple times. Women's volleyball topped Juniata twice for the title, with a 16-year gap in between (1981, 97). Women's water polo defeated Slippery Rock on two occasions (1986, 94). The women's water polo squad also has a history with UC Davis, as they were victorious against the Aggies three-straight years (1990, 91, 92). Lastly, in 1993, men's soccer bested Williams, while the women's tennis team beat Williams the following year.

Credit to the Coach
Three Triton coaches led their teams to the pinnacle of success on five or more occasions. Brian McManus (women's soccer) leads the way with seven titles, while Doug Dannevik (women's volleyball) follows with six, and current men's water polo head coach Denny Harper holds five from his time with the women's water polo team.

Harper leads UC San Diego's active coaches, but Liz LaPlante (women's tennis) follows closely with four national crowns.
