Triton Tuesday: UC San Diego's Student Body

Every day is a good day to learn more about UC San Diego, but we've chosen a particular one to spread knowledge with our new feature called "Triton Tuesday." Each Tuesday, get the inside scoop with fun facts about Triton athletics, the UC San Diego campus and community, and our beautiful home of San Diego, California, in a Did You Know? format.

UC San Diego was founded in 1960 and 60 years later has grown into one of the most populated universities in California. A total of 40,066 students have enrolled at UC San Diego for fall 2020. Of those, over 8,000 are graduate or professional students.

A record 99,115 freshmen and 19,257 transfer students applied for fall 2019 admission, demonstrating the University's growing popularity. During that same application cycle, UC San Diego was the second most sought after University of California school. Among Big West schools, UC San Diego has the biggest student population, with CSUN and Cal State Fullerton ranking second and third respectively.

UC San Diego reported for the 2018-19 school year over three-fourths of the undergraduate student body came from California and almost a fifth were international students. The most popular declared major by students is Biology, followed by Mathematics and Cognitive Sciences

To accommodate the increasing student population, UC San Diego's campus has expanded and continues to add more residential buildings. The Mesa Housing Neighborhood opened this year and provided additional housing for graduate students. The North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Center will become the new home for Sixth College upon completion. Another construction project that will help students commuting to campus is the light rail transit and UC San Diego Blue Line. The project is expected to be completed late 2021.

Excited for when it's safe for everyone to be back on campus!
