Every day is a good day to learn more about UC San Diego, but we've chosen a particular one to spread knowledge with our feature called "Triton Tuesday." Each Tuesday, get the inside scoop with fun facts about Triton athletics, the UC San Diego campus and community, and our beautiful home of San Diego, California, in a "Did You Know?" format.
In this week's Triton Tuesday segment, we're shining the spotlight on the award-winning faculty at UC San Diego. With so many amazing faculty members teaching in La Jolla, it's hard to keep track of the awards they've earned. Fortunately, our friends at University Communications are as good at stat-keeping as we are! Here are some of the astounding numbers:
Of nearly 3,000 faculty members, more than 200 current or emeriti have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS);Â more than 150 hold memberships in the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, or the National Academy of Medicine; and nearly 150 have been selected for the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship -- awarded to the brightest early career scientists in the U.S. and Canada.
Ever heard of the Nobel Prize? Sixteen Nobel laureates have taught or currently teach at UC San Diego. Theatre more your thing? We've got Academy Awards and a Tony award winner. Music? Yep, our faculty has a Grammy statuette. Writing? We've got Pulitzer prize winners, too!
Also not to be overlooked, Mario Molina was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2013.
Looks like UC San Diego will be needing a bigger trophy case soon!
