No. 6 UC San Diego Takes Two From San Francisco State On Saturday

LA JOLLA, Calif.  ?The 6th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader against San Francisco State on Saturday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field.  UCSD won the first game 12-2 as six different Tritons had multiple RBI.  Matt Rossman improved to 5-2 on the season.  In the second game, the Tritons won by a 10-2 score as seven different Tritons recorded at least two hits.  Trevor Decker improved to 3-1 on the season, pitching six innings and allowing two runs.  With the wins, UCSD improves to 18-7, 15-4 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Gators drop to 7-23, 2-21 CCAA.

Garrett Imeson had a double in the first game and two hits in the second game to tie the all-time career hits record at UCSD.  The record tying hit came on a bunt single in the fifth inning of the second game of the doubleheader.  Imeson now has 257 career hits, tying Bob Natal who had that amount from 1984-87.

 

In the first game, Brandon Gregorich had three hits, while Vance Albitz and Evan Kehoe had two hits apiece.  Albitz, Imeson, Kehoe, Gregorich, Robert Sedin and Josh Tanner had two RBI each.  Rossman went 5.1 innings and allowed one run to earn the win.  Sean Greer, Daniel Simmons and Elias Tuma closed out the win.

 

In the second game, the Tritons scored two in the first and two in the second to take a 4-2 lead.  The Tritons opened it up in the sixth with four runs and added two more in the sixth.  Imeson, Matt Cantele, Tim Mort, Sedin, Kellen Lee and Tanner had two hits apiece.  Decker went six innings to earn the win.  Decker now has 23 career wins which is tied for second all-time in UCSD history.  He is tied with Rick Nowak who had 23 wins from 1986-88.  Byron Grubman is the UCSD leader with 25 wins from 2003-06.

 

In the first inning of the first game, the Tritons scored two unearned runs with two outs as Brandon Gregorich singled for the 2-0 lead. 

 

With no outs in the second, Albitz hit an RBI single to left for the 3-0 lead.  Garrett Imeson followed with a two-RBI double to center for the 5-0 edge.  Evan Kehoe followed with a two run home run to right field and the Tritons had a 7-0 lead. 

 

With two outs in the UCSD fifth, Josh Tanner singled to shortstop for two RBI and UCSD went ahead 9-0.

 

SFSU got on the board in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Sean Proni. 

 

Robert Sedin doubled off the wall in left center for an RBI and the Tritons went ahead 10-1.  Albitz followed with an RBI single for UCSD's 11th run. 

 

The Tritons won the game 12-2.

 

In the second game with two outs in the first, Kehoe doubled and Matt Cantele followed with an RBI double and UCSD's first run.  After Gregorich walked, Tim Mort had an RBI single to left center and UCSD led 2-0 after the first.

 

SFSU's Patrick Haugen hit a sac fly RBI scoring Ryan Williams to make the score 2-1 UCSD. 

 

Kellen Lee led off the second inning with a solo homerun to right field for UCSD's 3-1 lead.  Imeson singled to right field to put runners on the corners with one out, career hit No. 256.  Kehoe hit a sac fly to right field and UCSD led 4-1.

 

With one out in the SFSU third, Bobby Carini doubled for an RBI and pulled SFSU within 4-2.  SFSU threatened with runners on the corners but Decker got the next batter on a 1-6-3 double play.

 

In the UCSD fifth, Gregorich doubled and Mort singled to put runners on the corners.  Sedin bunted a single for an RBI and Lee followed with an RBI single to give UCSD a 6-2 lead.  Tanner followed with a bunt single for an RBI and UCSD led 7-2.  Albitz hit a sac fly for UCSD's eighth run of the game. 

 

Gregorich added an RBI single in the sixth to give the Tritons a 9-2 lead.  Sedin added an RBI double to the right center gap for UCSD's 10th run.

 

Guido Knudson pitched a scoreless final inning for the Tritons.

 

UCSD is back in action on Sunday for the series finale against San Francisco State.  First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m. at Triton Baseball Field.
