No. 22 Tritons hit Four Homeruns in Win

LA JOLLA, Calif. - David Morehead hit two of the Tritons four homeruns as the 22nd-ranked UC San Diego baseball team defeated Cal Poly Pomona 10-7 on Friday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field.  Scott Clement and Damian Fante also homered for UCSD.  Garrett Imeson, John Roth, Morehead, Clement and Fante all had multi-hit games.  T.C. Geach (3-2) pitched four scoreless innings of relief for the win and Ryan Leake earned the save.  UCSD improves to 22-15, 13-9 CCAA while Cal Poly Pomona drops to 13-21, 11-10 CCAA.

In the first inning, UCSD got on the board with the help of three wild pitches to lead 1-0.  After a walk to Matt Cantele and a fourth wild pitch in the inning, UCSD had runners on second and third with two outs.  The Tritons would strand the runners but still lead 1-0 after the first inning.

In the CPP second, Tony Esquer led off with a homerun to right field to tie the game.  A double by Jake Mendrin and a two-out single by Kirk Gross put CPP ahead 2-1.

With one out in the UCSD third, John Roth singled and David Morehead homered to leftfield to put UCSD back ahead 3-2.  Scott Clement made it back-to-back homeruns when he homered over the right field wall to put the Tritons ahead 4- 2.

The Tritons could not come up with a shut down inning after taking the lead as CPP batted around and scored five runs on six hits to go ahead 7-4 in the fourth.

Morehead led off the fifth inning with his second homerun, this time to right center to bring UCSD within 7-5.  With one out, Matt Cantele walked and Damian Fante homered to leftfield, tying the game at 7-7.  Tim Mort then doubled and advanced to third with two outs.  Josh Tanner came up with a two-out single and put the Tritons back on top 8-7.  Garrett Imeson and John Roth then singled to put UCSD ahead 9-7.  Morehead was then intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs.  UCSD then left the bases loaded on a fly out to right field.

In the UCSD sixth, Matt Cantele singled to center and Fante was safe on a bunt single.  The runners advanced to second and third with one out on David Gomez' pinch hit groundout.  Erickson was then hit-by-pitch to load the bases with one gone.  Tanner then hit a sac fly to center, scoring Cantele to put UCSD ahead 10-7.

CPP put two on with two out in the seventh inning, but the next Bronco batter grounded out to first unassisted.

CPP's John Daniels led off the eighth inning with a single.  With two outs, Chase Stroupe singled to put runners on the corners and the potential tying run to the plate.  The next CPP batter flew out to right field, ending the inning with UCSD remaining ahead 10-7.

Marc Evans led off the ninth with a walk but was erased on a double play.  The next CPP batter was retired as Leake earned the save.

UCSD is back in action tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona.  First pitch of the first game is slated for 12:00 p.m.
