SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.- The UC San Diego baseball team defeated San Francisco State 11-2 on Sunday afternoon at Maloney Field. The win gives UCSD its first four-game sweep of the season, and keeps them alive in the race for a berth in the CCAA Tournament. Byron Grubman, who earned saves in games one and two of the series, started the game and went six-innings, earning the win. The win is Grubman's 23rd in his Triton career, tying the school record for most wins in a career at UCSD. The Tritons are now 30-22, 19-13 CCAA, while the Gators drop to 19-28-2, 8-21-1 CCAA.
Scott Clement, John Roth, David Morehead and Jonathan Erickson all had multi-hit games as the Tritons pounded out 13 hits in the win. Leading 5-2 through six, UCSD scored two in the seventh and four in the ninth to put the game out of reach. Clement and Morehead hit homeruns as the Tritons have hit 53 team homeruns in 2006. That total is one short of the school record of 54 set in 1987.
Grubman left after six innings and the Triton bullpen was in gear as Jose Navarro pitched two shutout innings and Ryan Leake finished with a perfect ninth.
With one week of CCAA Baseball action remaining before the conference tournament, no team has clinched a spot in the tournament. As many as eight teams remain alive for the four spots.
UCSD is back in action against Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, May 5. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m. at Triton Baseball Field.
