UCSD Sweeps Doubleheader against No. 7 Cal State L.A.

LA JOLLA, Calif. -The UC San Diego baseball team swept a doubleheader from No. 7 Cal State L.A. on Sunday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. Garrett Imeson had the go-ahead hits in both games for UCSD. The Tritons were down 8-3 in the first game and scored eight runs in the sixth inning to charge in front.  The Tritons won the first game 14-8, as Imeson tripled with the bases loaded and put UCSD ahead 9-8 in the sixth.  In the second game with the Tritons down 6-4, Imeson blasted a three-run homerun to leftfield, putting the Tritons ahead as they won 7-6.  Michael Kearney (2-2) won game one, pitching five innings and allowing one run.  Trevor Decker (2-1) was the winning pitcher in game two pitching two perfect innings.

 

In game one, Cal State L.A. scored four times in the fifth on two doubles and a homerun to lead 8-3 in the fifth.  UCSD scored twice in the bottom half as David Gomez and David Morehead hit RBI doubles.  At the end of five it was 8-5 CSULA.

 

In the sixth, Fante doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Fante would score on Jonathan Erickson's sac fly RBI, 8-6 CSULA.  UCSD then loaded the bases with one out.  Imeson then tripled in an eight pitch at-bat to right center, clearing the bases and putting UCSD ahead 9-8.  Gomez then singled, scoring Imeson for the 10-8 advantage.  Morehead then doubled and Roth reached on an infield hit to reload the bases.  Erickson then hit a two-out triple to right field, clearing the bases and UCSD led 13-8. 

 

The Tritons added one more run in the eighth.  In the game, UCSD pounded out 18 hits as Gomez and Fante had three apiece.  Imeson, Morehead, Erickson, Brian Trump and Josh Tanner had two hits apiece.

 

In game two, UCSD fell behind 6-3 in the fifth inning.  In the seven inning game, UCSD produced another clutch sixth inning.  Fante and Erickson led off with singles and Tim Mort reached on an error, scoring Fante to bring the Tritons within 6-4.  With two outs, Imeson blasted a three-run homerun to leftfield, pulling UCSD in front 7-6.  It was Imeson's fourth hit of the game.  For the day, Imeson went 6-for-9, scored four runs and had six RBI.  His hits included three singles, a double, triple and homerun.

 

UCSD improves to 13-9, 7-5 CCAA while Cal State L.A. drops to 13-6, 6-6 CCAA.

 

UCSD is back in action on Tuesday, March 14 for a doubleheader at Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Ariz.  First pitch of the first game is slated for 11:00 a.m.
