UCSD Takes Two from CSUSB on Saturday

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team rebounded from two tough losses on Thrusday and Friday to sweep a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon , 8-6 and 8-3, against Cal State San Bernardino.  UCSD is now 8-5 on the season and 2-2 in the CCAA while the Coyotes are 4-5 on the season and 2-2 in the conference.  In game one, David Morehead and Scott Clement each had two hits and hit homeruns as UCSD scored three in the eighth and one in the ninth for the win.  In game two, UCSD used a four-run fifth and a two-run sixth to break the game open.  Jonathan Erickson homered and had three RBI for the Tritons.

                       

Scott Clement had two hits, including a home run and drove in three runs for UCSD. Teammate David Morehead had a home run and two RBI among his two hits. John Roth and Tim Mort contributed two hits apiece to an 11-hit Tritons attack against three Coyotes pitchers.

           

Brad Croxton was the hitting star for the Coyotes with three hits in five at bats including a home run and three RBI. Patrick Walker and Jake Puckett each had two hits for the Coyotes, who had 12 hits in the game off the combined pitching efforts of Ryan Leake and T.C. Geach.

 

Geach, who pitched the final four innings, got the win in game one. Tim Montoya took the loss after pitching 7.1 innings. Two of the seven runs he allowed were unearned.

           

In game two, the  Tritons and Coyotes were tied 2-2 until UCSD broke the game open in the fifth with four runs off CSUSB starter Derek Baker and added two more in the sixth en route to a win in the seven-inning affair.

           

Jonathan Erickson homered and drove in three runs for UCSD which got the most out of the eight hits it produced against three Coyotes pitchers. Catcher Aaron Jimenez had a solo homer for the Coyotes in a seven-hit attack. CSUSB stranded 10 runners on base.

           

Todd Gimenez went six innings, gave up one earned run, struck out six and walked three to get the win with help in the seventh from reliever Trevor Decker. Baker, 1-2, took the loss for the Coyotes.

 

UCSD is back in action on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m when it travels to Point Loma for a non-conference game.  The Tritons host Sonoma State in a four-game series from March 3-5 at Triton Baseball Field.
