POMONA, Calif. -
The UC San Diego baseball team swept a doubleheader against Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday afternoon at Scolinos Field. UCSD won game one 7-3 as
David Gomez and
Scott Clement hit homeruns and
Jose Navarro pitched 6.1 innings for the win. In game two,
T.C. Geach pitched five shutout innings in relief for the victory as the Tritons won 8-5.
David Morehead hit his second homerun of the season and
Matt Lawson had three hits and three RBI. UCSD improves to 5-2 while the Broncos drop to 1-10.
In the first game, the Tritons scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead. In the sixth, Damian Fante doubled to centerfield, followed by Clement's second homerun of the season to put UCSD ahead 5-0. The Tritons built the lead to 6-0 in the seventh as Morehead crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Navarro yielded eight hits and no runs through six innings in another strong start. Navarro ran into some trouble in the seventh after one out and gave way to Trevor Decker. Decker pitched the final 2.2 innings and gave up one hit and no runs while striking out two to close out the UCSD victory. Navarro improves to 3-0 on the season.
In game two, UCSD's Tim Mort led off with a triple, but was forced out at home on Gomez' fielders choice. Lawson then doubled as Gomez scored. With two outs, Jonathan Erickson singled, scoring Lawson. After Erickson stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error, Fante singled to leftfield for the 3-0 UCSD lead.
CPP got to UCSD's pitching in the second inning, scoring four times to take the lead 4-3.
UCSD recaptured the lead in the fifth inning as Lawson singled and Morehead hit a homerun to leftfield for the 5-4 advantage in the seven inning game.
The Tritons came up with a big sixth inning as Gomez had an RBI single and Lawson's single brought in two more Tritons for the 8-4 lead. CPP added one run in the bottom half of the sixth for the final scoring.
UCSD and Cal Poly Pomona will square off again in a doubleheader at Triton Baseball Field tomorrow. First pitch of the first game is slated for 11:00 a.m. on the Triton campus.
