SAN BERNARDINO, Calif -Byron Grubman retired the first 17 batters he faced and pitched into the eighth inning as the UC San Diego baseball team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 6-2 on Saturday evening at the Cal State San Bernardino Tournament. UCSD improves to 2-1 while the Toros drop to 1-5. Grubman earned the win while Trevor Decker retired all five batters he faced for the save. Matt Cantele and Matt Lawson had two RBI apiece. Tim Mort had a pair of hits from the leadoff spot.
With Grubman perfect through five innings and a 1-0 lead, UCSD found some offense in the sixth inning with a two-out rally. After the first two Tritons were retired, David Morehead walked and advanced to third on an error. Bryan Silverman reached on another error, scoring Morehead for the 2-0 lead. Chris Hom was hit-by-pitch, followed by Cantele's double to rightcenter, driving in two more runs for the 4-0 advantage. Garrett Imeson then continued the two-out inning with a single, scoring Cantele and giving UCSD a 5-0 lead in the sixth inning.
CSUDH broke through with its first hit off Grubman with two-outs in the sixth and would end up scoring twice in the inning to cut the lead down to 5-2.
Lawson hit a sac fly RBI in the seventh to give UCSD an insurance run, 6-2.
Trevor Decker pitched the final 1.2 innings for the save.
UCSD is back in action on Sunday when it takes on tournament host Cal State San Bernardino at 11:00 a.m. in San Bernardino, Calif.
