LA JOLLA, Calif. — Peter Simeone has been named the head coach of the UC San Diego men's rowing program as the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics made the official announcement Tuesday.
Simeone spent the 2022-23 rowing season as the top assistant coach with the Tritons.
"I am truly honored to be named head coach of the UC San Diego men's rowing team," said Simeone. "There has been a lot of excitement around the team, the alumni, and the department after this past season and I am really looking forward to building on the foundation that the team worked tirelessly to establish."
UC San Diego put together a historic season over the 2022-23 academic year. The Tritons went undefeated in the spring and qualified for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta for the first time since 2021. The Varsity 8 crew took first place in the fourth-level final, marking the Tritons' best-ever finish at nationals.
Simeone also served as the team's recruiting coordinator last season, identifying a strong list of prospective scholar-athletes through his network of junior coaches around the country. He strategized and led on-the-water boat selection for UC San Diego's Junior Varsity and Third Varsity boats.
Since 2019, Simeone has been the head coach of the San Diego Rowing Club (SDRC) Varsity Men on Mission Bay after serving as an assistant coach from 2017-2019. He develops, implements, and manages the Varsity Men's training plan to compete at the highest level for junior athletes. Simeone led the SDRC Youth 8+ to one of its most successful runs in program history. He also coaches strength and conditioning programs, teaches techniques for mental resilience, and mentors athletes through the recruitment and college application processes.
"After having spent the last six years coaching on Mission Bay, I have gained a huge respect for the Triton program and all of the scholar-athletes who have contributed to the team's success. This is an incredible opportunity and I am extremely excited to get to work with such an exceptional group of individuals. I'm eager to get back out on the water this fall and continue to build upon the legacy of UC San Diego Men's Rowing. Go Tritons!"
Prior to working with the SDRC, Simeone spent several years in the United States Navy as a Naval Special Warfare Candidate. He also worked with the Naval Special Warfare Continuum of Leadership Development program alongside Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUDs) instructors analyzing teams and individuals in the BUDs program.
As a competitive collegiate rower, Simeone attended Northeastern University where he studied Civil Engineering. During this time, he was also a competitive member of Pennsylvania Athletic Club's (Penn AC) Intermediate and Pre-Elite teams.
Simeone is a 2009 graduate of Pennsylvania's Monsignor Bonner High School, where he first started his rowing journey.
