GOLD RIVER, Calif. — The UC San Diego men's rowing team opened racing at the prestigious Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta Friday.

The 123rd running of the event is May 29-31 on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif., just outside of Sacramento.

The Tritons finished sixth in the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 races. Both boats will be back on the water Saturday morning in the CD Semifinals. The top three finishers in each event advance to Sunday's C Final and the remainder will go to the D Final.

In Friday's Varsity 8 heat race, UC San Diego, ranked No. 25 nationally, went up against No. 2 California, No. 7 Dartmouth, No. 10 Yale, No. 15 Columbia, and No. 18 Georgetown.

UC San Diego's Second Varsity 8 took on Princeton, Brown, Cornell, Wisconsin, and Temple in a heat race as well.

Saturday, the V8 will be racing alongside No. 17 Temple, No. 13 Cornell, No. 18 Georgetown, No. 19 Holy Cross, and No. 20 La Salle.

The Second Varsity 8 will be racing with Drexel, Boston University, Temple, Navy, and La Salle. 

This is the 10th-straight season that UC San Diego has qualified for the IRA National Championship Regatta.
