Varsity 8 Wins Fourth-Level Final at IRA National Championship Regatta

WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. – The UC San Diego Men's Rowing team capped a successful season Sunday as the Varsity 8 crew won its final at the 120th Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta on Mercer Lake.

UC San Diego fielded First, Second, and Third Varsity 8 boats in the three-day event with heats and repechage races Friday, semifinals on Saturday, and finals on Sunday.

With its victory in the fourth-level final, the Tritons' Varsity 8 placed 19th of 24 crews overall.

The Second Varsity 8 was 18th of 22 teams, while the Third Varsity 8 finished 17th of 18 crews.

VARSITY 8+
Friday morning, UC San Diego's Varsity 8 boat finished in sixth place in Heat 3 with a time of 6:15.676. Princeton (5:35.676) won the race and was followed by Harvard, Wisconsin, Boston University, La Salle and UC San Diego.

The Tritons followed up later that afternoon with a third-place finish (6:14.934) in Repechage 1, edging out Georgetown by nearly three seconds. Dartmouth (6:01.716) took first ahead of Navy, UC San Diego, and Georgetown.
 
In Saturday's semifinal, UC San Diego placed fourth with a time of 6:37.305, coming in ahead of Santa Clara and MIT. Boston University (6:21.785) won, Wisconsin was second, and La Salle took third. 

Sunday's Fourth-Level Final saw the Tritons lead wire-to-wire and win with a time of 5:53.944. It was a battle against Colgate the whole way as the Raiders placed a close second in 5:54.704.

SECOND VARSITY 8+
UC San Diego's Second Varsity 8 boat began the weekend by placing fifth in Heat 4 with a time of 6:04.650, just a second behind fourth-place Stanford. Brown (5:45.800) took the win ahead of Princeton, Pennsylvania, Stanfod, UC San Diego, and Georgetown.

In the three-boat Repechage 3, the Tritons crossed in 6:17.204 for third place behind Boston University (6:05.375) and Navy.

Saturday, UC San Diego placed second in Semifinal 3 with a time of 6:36.391, five seconds back of Stanford, which won in 6:31.699. The Tritons came in ahead of Drexel, Georgetown, and Santa Clara.
 
In Sunday's Third-Level Final, the Tritons took sixth place in 6:07.859. Stanford won in 5:56.739 ahead of Navy, Wisconsin, La Salle, Drexel, and UC San Diego.

THIRD VARSITY 8+
The Third Varsity 8 boat's participation was cut short due to weather issues. The Tritons competed in a heat race Friday and a final Sunday. The repechage and semifinal races were not run.

Racing in Heat 2, the Tritons came in sixth at 06:24.231. Yale was the winner in 5:49.115. Dartmouth took second, Syracuse was third, Navy was fourth, and Wisconsin came in fifth.
 
Sunday, the Tritons bested Santa Clara by over three seconds to secure a fifth-place finish in the Third-Level Final, coming across the line in 6:24.028. Cornell won in 6:00.672, Drexel was second, Wisconsin third, and Oregon State fourth.

OTHER WINNERS
California won four Grand Final races and took home the James Ten Eyck Memorial Trophy as the overall points leader.

The Bears won the Varsity 8 Grand Final with a time of 5:31.716, just over a second ahead of second-place Wisconsin.

They also won the Second Varsity 8 Grand Final in 5:39.600, the Third Varsity 8 Grand Final in 5:42.220, and the Varsity Four Grand Final in 7:04.781.
