Shibuya Becomes UCSD?s All-Time Career Innings Leader in 5-2 Win Over Cal Poly Pomona

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Behind another stellar outing from senior right-hander Tim Shibuya, the eighth-ranked UC San Diego baseball team rolled to a 5-2 victory over visiting Cal Poly Pomona in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Thursday night at Triton Ballpark.

The Tritons' ace tossed his second complete game of the season, matched his career-high with 11 strikeouts and became the program's all-time career leader in innings pitched as UCSD took the series opener with the Broncos. He scattered five hits and walked none, retiring the final six Bronco batters.

Shibuya (6-1), who became UCSD's all-time leader in wins earlier this season, got plenty of backup from the offense. The Tritons banged out 14 hits, their second highest total of the season, including four doubles and a triple.

"I felt good out there today, the ball was coming off the fingertips well," said Shibuya.

First baseman Evan Kehoe went 4-for-4 at the plate and drove a pair of runs, while left fielder Aaron Bauman finished with three hits (two doubles), a run scored and a RBI. Center fielder Danny Susdorf hit his first triple of the season.

Five different Tritons scored runs. The damage could have been worse, but UCSD left 10 runners on base.

"The team up and down the lineup committed to really battling tonight with two strikes," said Kehoe. "We made their pitchers work with two strikes, we weren't just giving in."

Cal Poly Pomona had five hits. Right fielder Jordan Whitman went 2-for-4 with two runs and first baseman Chris Miller had the lone RBI for the Broncos. Starter Casey Yokubaitis (2-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings.

The Tritons scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back, winning their third consecutive game. With one out, outfielder Kyle Saul walked and went to third on a base hit by Susdorf. Catcher Michael Benton then laid down a bunt to squeeze in Saul for the first run of the game. On a ground out, Susdorf went to third and Benton moved up to second. They were both plated when Kehoe singled to right.

UCSD went up 4-0 with a single run in the fourth before Cal Poly Pomona got on the board in the fifth. The teams traded runs in the sixth and seventh innings as well.

Shibuya was seven innings short of the record entering the game. He surpassed Jose Navarro, who threw 364 innings from 2003 through 2006. With tonight's nine innings, Shibuya has racked up 366.1 innings since he began his freshman season in 2008. He became UCSD's all-time winningest pitcher when he picked up his 31st victory on Feb. 11.

Senior infielder Grant Bauer returned to the Triton lineup after missing all 24 games of the season with an injury. He started at second base and went 2-for-4 with a run out of the nine-spot. Bauer started 44 games in 2010, hitting .310 and driving in 32 runs en route to Daktronics West Region Second Team and All-CCAA Honorable Mention honors.

Blake Tagmyer had started every game at second base until tonight. He's batting .338 and his .527 slugging and .451 on-base percentages lead the team.

UCSD improves to 18-7 overall and 11-6 in the CCAA, while Cal Poly Pomona drops to 15-8 and 9-8 in conference play. The Broncos had won five of their last six entering Thursday's game. The Tritons have won 15 of the last 16, including the last eight, match-ups with the Broncos.

The two teams play again on Friday, Mar. 25 at Triton Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tickets are available at the park and UCSD students are admitted free with a valid ID.
