LA JOLLA, Calif. - Summer Austin of UC San Diego women's crew earned a spot on the 2010 Division II Pocock All-America Team, Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) officials announced Monday.
The 10-member All-American Team recognizes the outstanding performances of rowers and coxswains at D-II institutions.
"As a sophomore, Summer was a reserve for our team that finished as national runners-up," UCSD head coach Pattie Pinkerton said. "We lost a lot of rowers to graduation after that race and since then, Summer has taken on a leadership role. This honor recognizes the great success she's had as an athlete through her four years as a Triton."
Austin is a Buena Park native and graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 2006. As a senior now at UCSD, she is a History and Archaeology double major and Art History minor at Marshall College. Rowing out of the six seat during competitions, Austin also recorded a 2,000 meter erg time of 7:22.1 earlier in the season. She also serves as the team representative to the Triton Athletic Council.
Also earning postseason honors for the Tritons are seniors Lynn Nguyen and Brianna Patterson, who each received the 2010 Scholar Athlete Award. The criteria for the accolade included rowing in a minimum of 75 percent of the spring races and holding a 3.5 cumulative grade point average across the career.
"The honor is great for Lynn and Brianna," Patterson said, "as the award honors the fact that is possible to maintain a high standard of academics and athletics at the same time, even with all the training hours they've put in."
Nguyen, a Computer Science major in Warren College, hails from Milpitas, Calif. She was also named Scholar Athlete as a freshman in 2009.
A Mission Viejo native, Patterson is studying Linguistics and Sociology in Muir College. Earlier in the month, she was named to the All-Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Second Team for her performance during the championships in Gold River.
