No. 2 UC San Diego Sets Program Records In Wins And Runs Scored In Doubleheader Sweep

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The 2nd-ranked UC San Diego baseball team swept a doubleheader against San Francisco State by scores of 11-2 and 9-5 on Saturday afternoon at Maloney Field. The Tritons have now won a school-record 44 games and are now 18-1 on the road. Brandon Gregorich had hits in both games of the doubleheader to set a new single-season record of 87 hits, breaking teammate Vance Albitz' former mark. UCSD has also scored 476 runs in 2010, which is also a single-season record.

With the wins, UCSD improves to 44-6, 34-5 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while San Francisco State drops to 22-31, 15-24 CCAA.

In the first game, the Tritons scored all of their runs in the first five innings, cruising to the 11-2 win. Grant Bauer had a two-run homerun and an RBI single for his three RBI. Kyle Saul, Aaron Bauman, Gregorich, Danny Susdorf, Kellen Lee and Robert Sedin also had multi-hit games.

Susdorf and Lee had two RBI apiece.

Matt Rossman improved to 9-0 in five innings of work. He scattered five hits, gave up one run, walked none and struck out nine.

Elias Tuma pitched two shutout innings with two strikeouts, while Eric Abraham pitched a scoreless frame and Richard Kilbury finished the game allowing one run in his one inning of work.

The game one loss went to Kyle Mastellar who lasted three innings, giving up nine hits and seven runs.

In the second game, the Tritons went up against SFSU's Patrick Haugen, who entered the game as the No. 2 pitcher in the NCAA D-II in strikeouts. Despite trailing the Gators 3-0 in the seven-inning game, the Tritons rallied by scoring two runs in the third and seven more runs in the fourth to take a 9-3 lead and eventual 9-5 win.

Kirby St. John was effective in earning the win to improve to 10-1 on the year. St. John went 6.0 innings, allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out two. Daniel Simmons pitched a scoreless seventh-inning to close out the game.

Haugen only lasted 3.2 frames for SFSU, giving up 11 hits, nine runs, five earned and striking out six.

Vance Albitz finished the day going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while Saul added three hits with an RBI. Gregorich and Michael Benton had two RBI apiece.

UC San Diego is back in action for the series finale on Sunday against SFSU. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. on the SFSU campus.
