TURLOCK, Calif. - A three-run homerun by
Grant Bauer broke open a tight game as the 4th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team collected 20 hits on its way to an 18-5 victory over Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field. Bauer finished the day going 4-for-4 with five RBI, while
Evan Kehoe also went 4-for-5 with three RBI. UCSD completes a four-game sweep at CSUS, and remains three games ahead of second-place Cal State Dominguez Hills in the conference standings. UC San Diego improves to 34-5, 24-4 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while Cal State Stanislaus drops to 17-20, 13-15 CCAA.
Vance Albitz finished the day going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and his 60th career double. The double ties the UCSD career record, as former Triton David Morehead had 60 doubles in his UCSD career. Albitz is also no. 1 in career runs scored at UCSD with 199. The senior shortstop continues to inch closer to the all-time school record for hits. Albitz will begin next week with 292 career hits, trailing former Triton Garrett Imeson who had 306 hits in his UCSD career.
In addition to Albitz, Bauer and Kehoe, Michael Benton, Kyle Saul and Aaron Bauman also had multi-hit games.
Also of note, Bryan Knapp singled in the eighth inning, his seventh consecutive hit in as many at-bats. Knapp started the season 0-for-2 and is now 7-for-9 on the year.
With the score tied at 2-2 through four innings, the Tritons scored six times in the fifth inning, with Bauer providing a three-run homerun. UCSD continued to add runs with eight more in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to close out the win.
Kirby St. John earned the start for the Tritons and went 4.1 innings, allowing two runs and no earned runs. He was unable to complete five innings however, leaving the bases loaded. Eric Abraham came out of the pen to get the final outs in the fifth inning, without allowing an inherited runner to score. Abraham earned his first win of the season.
Richard Kilbury pitched the sixth inning, while Sean Greer pitched the seventh and eighth frame. Elias Tuma finished off the game for UCSD.
UCSD is back in action next week with a home-and-home series against Cal State L.A. First pitch on Thursday, APritl 15 is set for 3:00 p.m. at Triton Ballpark.
