No. 3 UC San Diego Cruises To Sweep Against Grand Canyon

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 3rd-ranked UC San Diego baseball team completed a four-game sweep over Grand Canyon on Saturday, defeating the Antelopes 15-2 in game one, and 15-0 in game two. UCSD's starting pitchers Matt Rossman and Kirby St. John both earned wins, looking strong in their last starts before the conference schedule next week. Brandon Gregorich was one of several offensive stars for the Tritons, going a combined 5-for-6 with seven RBI and five runs scored. Kyle Saul hit for the cycle in the two games as UCSD outscored GCU 52-4 in the four game set.

With the wins, UCSD improves to 9-1, while Grand Canyon drops to 3-5.

In the first game, UCSD led 7-1 through six innings before the flood gates opened in the seventh inning. UCSD had 10 hits alone in the seventh inning, and scored eight runs.

Rossman improved to 1-0 on the season, pitching seven innings, scattering four hits, walking none and striking out four. Elias Tuma and Taylor Austin pitched the final two shutout innings.

UCSD had 18 hits in the first game as Saul, Gregorich, Evan Kehoe, Michael Benton and Danny Susdorf had multiple hits.

In the UCSD first, Albitz walked on Saul reached on a bunt single. With one out after a balk, Gregorich grounded out to shortstop for an RBI and UCSD had a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Kehoe followed with an RBI single to center and UCSD led 2-0 through one inning.

In the UCSD third, Kehoe doubled off the left field wall with two outs for an RBI and UCSD led 3-0.

WOU scored a run on John Stanko's solo homerun in the fourth to pull within 3-1.

The Tritons responded in the fourth as four Tritons walked to force in a run at 4-1 UCSD. After a run scored on a wild pitch, Gregorich hit a sac fly to right field for an RBI and UCSD led 6-1.

The Tritons added eight more runs in the seventh inning on 10 hits as Gregorich delivered a two-run homerun and UCSD led 15-1.

In the second game, Saul hit a first inning solo homerun to right field to give UCSD a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Gregorich singled and stole second. Kehoe followed with an RBI single through the left side and UCSD led 2-0.

In the top of the second, GCU loaded the bases with one out, but St. John got the next GCU hitter to hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and UCSD still up 2-0.

In the UCSD second, Albitz hit a two-RBI single to center to give the Tritons a 4-0 lead. UCSD would load the bases and Gregorich cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to center and UCSD led 7-0.

UCSD cruised to the 15-0 win as Sean Greer and Guido Knudson pitched the final two scoreless innings. St. John improved to 2-1 on the season, pitching four shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.

UCSD is back in action next week when it takes on Chico State. First pitch on Friday is set for 2:00 p.m. at Triton Ballpark.
