Okasaki Finishes Tied For 31st As UCSD Season Ends At NCAA Central/West Regional Tournament

LINCOLN, Neb. - The UC San Diego men's golf team concluded the 2009 season on Wednesday as Keith Okasaki, Raj Samra, and Billy Olsen concluded play at the NCAA Central/West Regional on the Wilderness Golf Course in Lincoln, Nebraska. Okasaki, in his second season as part of the men's golf squad, led the Tritons on the Wednesday with a final round 77 and was the top UCSD finisher overall, shooting a 13-over 226 and finishing tied for 31st over the three-day tournament.

After following his first round 78 with an even-par 71 on the second day of competition , Okasaki made a huge jump from 64th to 23rd. Samra, UCSD's top finisher during day one after shooting a three-over 74 that left him 20th overall, finished the regional tournament with rounds of 76 and 83, tying for 71st overall with a 20-over 233. Samra also tied for 17th in birdies made during the three-day tournament with eight. Olsen, a senior, finished his Triton career tied for 89th overall with a 238 total after rounds of 81, 77, and 80.

Sonoma State All-American Jarin Todd was the individual winner, finishing the 54-hole tournament with a five-under 208 after rounds of 66, 67, and a final day 75. Colorado-Colorado Springs would finish first as a team with an 11-over par 863.

UC San Diego's conference, the California Collegiate Athletic Association, was well-represented as Sonoma State, which led through 36 holes, and Cal State Stanislaus tied for second with a team total 14-over 866. Cal State San Bernardino finished fourth at 875 and was the third CCAA squad to advance to the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships, taking place May 19-22 at Loois Trail Country Club in Blaine, Washington. Grand Canyon is the fifth team earning a spot at the NCAA Championships, along with individual qualifiers Brandon Harkins of Chico State and Jake Koppenberg of Western Washington.
