POMONA, Calif. ?The 5th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team exploded with 19 runs in a 19-5 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Friday afternoon at Scolinos Field. The Tritons scored eight times in the fourth inning as Brandon Gregorich homered, part of a 3-for-4 day with three RBI. Gino Fata and Tim Mort also had three RBI apiece to go along with UCSD's 21 total hits. Trevor Decker (7-2) cruised in his last regular season outing, throwing seven innings, allowing four runs, striking out nine and walking none. With the win, UCSD improves to 31-12, 25-9 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Broncos drop to 26-21, 16-18 CCAA.
Also adding multiple hit games for UCSD was Vance Albitz (2-for-4, two RBI), Garrett Imeson (3-for-4, RBI) and Evan Kehoe (2-for-5, RBI). In addition to Gregorich's fifth homerun of the year, Gregorich came on to pitch the final inning for the Tritons. Daniel Simmons also saw action pitching a scoreless eighth inning.
Justin Robles hit his first collegiate homerun as a Triton and UCSD went 6-for-7 in stolen bases as Imeson had three steals.
Leading 3-1 through three innings, the Tritons broke through with eight runs in the fourth, the last two coming on Gregorich's homerun and UCSD held an 11-1 lead through four frames. UCSD added one in the sixth, three in the seventh and four in the eighth to close out the scoring.
Decker limited the Broncos to one run through the first seven innings before exiting in the eighth. UCSD pinch hitters and reserves went 6-for-12 in the game with four runs scored and six RBI.
The rest of the CCAA schedule was rained out on Friday afternoon and will aim to get doubleheaders in on Saturday and Sunday.
The UCSD and CPP series moves to Triton Baseball Field with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader first pitch on Saturday. Fans may want to arrive early as the 2009 Triton Baseball Senior Class will be honored in a brief ceremony before first pitch.
