ROHNERT PARK, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's tennis team won a thrilling match with Sonoma State on Friday, outlasting the Seawolves on their home courts, 5-4. UCSD improved to 11-10 with the victory, while Sonoma wrapped up its regular season at 8-11.
The Seawolves got off to a great start, winning two of three doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead. Connor Olson and Jordan Smith downed
Kazumi Negishi and
Erik Elliott at No. 1 doubles, 9-6, and Zel Sperry and Jeremy Heckley teamed to post a 9-8 win over
Vincent Nguyen and
Brandon Stevenson at No. 2.
Naveen Dixit and
Sam Ling then defeated Scott Gaynor and Andrew Khuri-Yakub 8-4 at No. 3 doubles to start the Triton comeback.
Needing to win four out of the six singles matches, UCSD did just that, posting victories at each of the last four spots on the singles ladder to claim the win. After Olson and Sperry won at No. 1 and No. 2 for Sonoma, Dixit recorded a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Khuri-Yakub at No. 3 and
Chapman Chan defeated Heckley 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.
Jake Fellow defeated Jordan Smith 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 to tie things at 4-4 and Ling pulled out a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 to seal things up for UCSD.
The Tritons wrap up the regular season at UC Santa Cruz on Saturday.
