LA JOLLA, Calif. ?The 6th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 8-3 on Thursday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. The Toros scored two runs to jump out to an early lead, but the Tritons scored three runs in both the third and fifth innings as part of their 10 hit attack. Tim Shibuya (6-2) earned the win, going eight innings and allowing just one earned run. Tim Mort led three Tritons with multi-hits, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. With the win, UCSD improves to 26-8, 20-5 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Toros drop to 25-17, 14-11 CCAA.
The win was UCSD's 16th in its last 17 games. Also with multiple hit games for the Tritons was Garrett Imeson and Matt Cantele. Josh Tanner had two RBI's and Kellen Lee hit his team leading sixth homerun of the season.
Guido Knudson finished off the game for UCSD in a non-save situation as Knudson struck out the side in the ninth.
Phillip Van Doren took the loss for CSUDH dropping to 3-4.
In the CSUDH first with two outs and a runner on third, Jon Alia and Paul Michael Klingsburg hit back-to-back RBI doubles for the Toros' 2-0 lead.
In the UCSD third, Brandon Gregorich drew a two-out bases loaded walk for an RBI. Tim Mort followed with a two-RBI single, giving the Tritons a 3-2 lead.
Kellen Lee led off the UCSD fourth with a solo homerun to center field and UCSD led 4-2.
With two outs in the CSUDH fifth, Alia doubled down the left field line for an RBI to pull CSUDH within 4-3. With runners on second and third, Shibuya struck out the following Toro to strand the runners in scoring position and the Tritons remained ahead.
Evan Kehoe led off the UCSD fifth with a double down the left field line and came around to score on Cantele's single up the middle for the 5-3 Triton lead. With two outs and the bases loaded, Josh Tanner singled through the right side for two RBI and UCSD went ahead 7-3.
In the UCSD sixth, Garrett Imeson singled and Kehoe was hit by a pitch. With two outs and runners on the corners the Tritons perfected a delayed double steal for a run and led 8-3 to round out the scoring.
UCSD and CSUDH return to the field on Friday with a first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m. at Triton Baseball Field.
