LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 120th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships wrapped up on Sunday, after four full days of intense match play at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. The UC San Diego men's team was represented by six participants, along with head coach
Eric Steidlmayer and former Triton Michael Meyer. Six Tritons began Friday play competing in the consolation bracket, while UCSD's top tandem of
Erik Elliott and
Kazumi Negishi competed in the championship bracket round of 64.
In the second round of the open championships, UCSD's
Erik Elliott and
Kazumi Negishi defeated John Magliano and Brett Tobin in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. In the following round of 32, Elliot and Negishi faced off against
Bijan Moallemi and Charles Hoeveler, falling 6-2, 6-1.
UCSD was represented by three teams in the consolation bracket of the tournament. In the third round UCSD's
Vincent Nguyen and
Brandon Stevenson were defeated by Ryan Cheung of Irvine and Zachary Leslie of San Diego, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman
Jake Fellow and
William McCall were beaten by Knot Likitkumchorn and Jared Miller, 6-2, 6-1. The third round of the consolation bracket also featured Head Coach
Eric Steidlmayer and Michael Meyer who defeated Jake Fleming of Newport Beach and Ahmed Ismail of Ojai, 6-4, 6-3.
Steidlmayer and Meyer faced off against Likitkumchorn and Miller in the fourth round and avenged a previous Triton loss with a 7-5, 6-2 victory. In the quarterfinals Steidlmayer and Meyer defeated Benjamin Wirth of Virginia Beach and Marwan Ramadan of Astoria, New York in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. The consolation semifinals saw the pair face off against Stebastien Vidal and Keziel Juneau. Steidlamyer and Meyer unfortanetly would fall to the eventual consolation champions, 6-2, 6-1.
The Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament is the second oldest tennis event in the United States. First held in 1890 at The Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, California, the event moved to the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club in 1943 and has been held there ever since. Past participants include such notable tennis stars as Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Ted Schroeder and Arthur Ashe.
Due to its notoriety the tournament attracts some of the top collegiate tennis teams in the nation. This year some of the out-of-state schools competing included Notre Dame, Boston College, Rice, Villanova and Texas A&M. The tournament also featured some of the top Division I teams in the state including USC, UCLA, Stanford, California and Pepperdine, all of which are nationally ranked.
The Tritons travel to Pomona on Wednesday, facing off against conference opponent Cal Poly Pomona at 2:00 p.m.
