LA JOLLA, Calif. ?The 6th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team pounded out 14 hits and defeated San Francisco State by a 10-3 score on Friday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. Four of UCSD's hits came off the bat of Garrett Imeson, who has inched closer to the all-time career hits mark at UCSD. The senior second baseman enters Saturday's contest with 254 hits, just three hits shy of tying the all-time mark of 257, held by Bob Natal (1984-87). With the win, the Tritons improve to 16-7, 13-4 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Gators drop to 7-21, 2-19 CCAA.
Tim Shibuya earned the win, pitching six innings, allowing one earned run and striking out six. Ryland MacFadyen and Daniel Simmons also pitched well in the win.
Several Tritons had big offensive days. Imeson went 4-for-5 with two RBI, Robert Sedin went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Josh Tanner also went 3-for-4 with two RBI. The Tritons were able to steal five bases in the early stages of the game. Seven different Tritons had hits in the game.
UCSD scored three runs in the second and added five in the third, opening up an 8-0 lead.
With one out in the UCSD second, Robert Sedin hit an infield single and stole second. Kellen Lee followed with an RBI single. Josh Tanner singled to center to put runners on the corners and Vance Albitz put down a sac bunt RBI. With two outs, Garrett Imeson doubled to left for an RBI and the Tritons had a 3-0 lead.
In the third, the Tritons loaded the bases with no outs. Sedin followed with a double to right field for two RBI and the Tritons led 5-0. Lee hit a sac fly to center for UCSD's sixth run. After Sedin stole third, Tanner singled up the middle for the 7-0 lead. After Albitz doubled, Imeson singled to left for an RBI.
SFSU got on the board in the fourth on a two out RBI single by Zack Anderson.
The Tritons would tack on two more runs in the seventh as the scoring would end with the Tritons winning by a 10-3 score.
UCSD and SFSU will return to the field on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Triton Baseball Field.
