LA JOLLA, Calif. ?The UC San Diego baseball team defeated Cal State L.A. 11-1 on Thursday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. Tim Shibuya (2-1) retired the first 13 Golden Eagles and UCSD scored three runs in the fifth and added six runs in the eighth. Vance Albitz went 4-for-4 with three runs, while Evan Kehoe went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Cal State L.A. managed only four hits against Shibuya and two relief pitchers. With the victory, UCSD improves to 8-3, 5-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while Cal State L.A. drops to 11-5, 4-1 CCAA.
Shibuya went 8.0 innings, allowed four hits, walked none and struck out four. His only mistake came against CSULA's Michael Vinyard who hit a homerun in the eighth. CSULA did not get its first hit off Shibuya until the fifth inning.
In addition to Albitz and Kehoe netting multi-hit games, Josh Tanner went 2-for-3 with two RBI, Tim Mort went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Robert Sedin also had two hits.
Albitz led off the UCSD first with a single to left center. Tanner followed with a sac bunt to move Albitz to second. With two outs, Kehoe doubled to center field for the RBI and the Tritons led 1-0.
In the UCSD fourth, UCSD put two runners on with no outs, but a double play ground out ended the threat and the score remained 1-0 UCSD.
In the UCSD fifth, Albitz walked and Tanner singled and the runners moved up to second and third with no outs on an error. Garrett Imeson followed with a walk to load the bases with no outs. Kehoe doubled to center field for two RBI and UCSD went ahead 3-0. With one out, Mort layed down the squeeze bunt for an RBI and the Tritons had a 4-0 edge.
The Tritons loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. Tanner recorded a sac fly RBI to center for UCSD run in the inning and UCSD had a 5-0 lead.
In the CSULA eighth with one out, Michael Vinyard hit a pinch hit solo homerun to left and UCSD led 5-1.
In the UCSD eighth with one out, Tanner hit an RBI single through the right side for UCSD's sixth run. Imeson hit a sac fly RBI to make the score 7-1 UCSD. With two out Matt Cantele doubled to right field for two RBI. Tim Mort and Robert Sedin hit consecutive RBI doubles and UCSD led 11-1.
Elias Tuma and Ryland MacFadyen pitched the ninth inning for UCSD.
The teams return to the field for game two of the series on Friday, with first pitch slated for 2:00 p.m. at Triton Baseball Field.
