Triton Pair Wins WIRA Petite Final; Four UCSD Boats to Compete in Finals on Sunday

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's crew duo of sophomores Ryan Armando and Dan Hallisy won the Pair Petite Final at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Championships Saturday while the varsity eight and novice eight put in stellar heat performances to qualify for their respective Grand Finals to be held during day two.

 

After taking fifth place in their heat, Armando and Hallisy crossed the finish line at the Petite Final with a time of 8:06.4. Puget Sound (8:08.3), Orange Coast College (8:09.7) and the University of the Pacific (8:10.9) trailed closely behind.

 

The Triton varsity eight, competing in one of three heats Saturday, took second with a time of 6:06.7. The University of San Diego led the pack, crossing the finish line just before at 6:05.5. The Grand Final will be held at 11:40 a.m. on Sunday. The six-team field features OCC, Gonzaga, USD, Santa Clara, UC Davis and UCSD.

 

The Triton novice eight also took second in their heat, coming in at 6:15.3 behind the OCC at 6:06.1. The Grand Final for the novices will begin at 10:10 a.m.

 

The UCSD second varsity eight and second novice eight groups, without qualifying heats on Saturday, will also enter finals on day two of the WIRA Championships.
