LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The No. 23 UC San Diego women's tennis team finished up its regular season with a 9-0 win over CCAA opponent and No. 35 Cal State LA. The victory extended the Tritons CCAA consecutive win streak to 48. UCSD improved its record to 13-10, 8-0 CCAA, to take first in the conference. CSULA fell to 9-4, 4-4 CCAA, to finish third in the conference.
UC San Diego swept the doubles play to take a 3-0 match lead into singles action. The Golden Eagles put up a solid fight in extending three of the singles matches to tie-breakers. In the No. 1 singles match Triton Natalie Varnay concluded her CCAA dominance with a win over Iona Comsa 6-7, 7-6, 1-0 (10-6). Varnay went 8-0 in conference play this season.
UCSD's Molly Sullens was also pushed into a tie-breaker situation eventually winning 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) over Linda Majzlikova. Sullens finished the season going 7-0 in singles matches in conference.
Valerie Tang also played a decisive tie-break for UCSD and defeated Jennifer Avila 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3). The freshman finished 4-0 in CCAA singles matches this season.
UCSD will next take part in the NCAA regional tournament which will begin on May 8.
