PHOENIX, Ariz. ? The 14th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team completed a four-game sweep against Grand Canyon, defeating the Antelopes 16-9 on Sunday afternoon in Phoenix. Every Triton starter recorded a hit and seven of the nine batters recorded at least two hits. Tim Mort and Tony Bonelli recorded three hits apiece as the Tritons hit 18 in the game. UCSD led by a slim 10-9 lead through the first five frames. The Tritons exploded for six runs in the seventh, two coming on Garrett Imeson's two-RBI double. Imeson's hits give him 200 in his career, just the eighth player in school history to reach the milestone. UCSD improves to 28-7 while the Antelopes drop to 8-26.
The Tritons used seven pitchers as Nick Rodieck (1-0) earned the win.
Evan Kehoe extended his hitting streak to 15 games and is now hitting .402 this season. Imeson went 2-for-4 with four RBI, raising his average to .409. Nick Burke and Mort added two RBI apiece.
Joe Raleigh, Tim Shibuya, Eric Abraham and Tim Strombel pitched the final four scoreless frames for the Tritons. The quartet allowed only three hits to close out the win.
With UCSD trailing 4-3, the Tritons scored six times on seven hits in the third inning. Leading 9-4, GCU cut the Triton lead down to 10-9 after a four-run fourth and a run in the fifth.
UCSD broke open the game in the seventh with another six runs, two coming on Imeson's two-RBI double. Burke also recorded an RBI single for UCSD's sixth run of the inning.
UCSD resumes California Collegiate Athletic Association play next week when it travels to Turlock to face Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, April 4. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. on the CSUS campus.
The CCAA series against the Warriors begins a stretch which will see the Tritons face three of the top teams in the conference. UCSD faces CSUS on the road from April 4-6, returns home to face Chico State on Apr. 11-13 and Sonoma State on Apr. 18-20.
