PHOENIX, AZ. ? The 14th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team swept a doubleheader against Grand Canyon on Saturday afternoon at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix. UCSD won the first game 5-4 and took the second game 5-1. With the wins, UCSD improves to 27-7, while GCU drops to 8-25. In the first game, Guido Knudson (4-1) earned the win while Keith Noe earned his seventh save of the season, pitching the final two scoreless frames. In game two, Matt Rossman (6-2) pitched a gem, going the complete-game (seven innings), allowing one run, walking none and striking out four. Like the first game, UCSD took an early lead and cruised to the win.
The wins were No.'s 300 and 301 for head coach Dan O'Brien.
In the first game, Tim Mort recorded two doubles and an RBI, while Evan Kehoe went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Josh Tanner, Chris Franco and Matt Cantele also drove in runs for UCSD. Knudson went the first five innings, allowing no runs, before running into trouble in the sixth. Noe came on as the Tritons escaped the frame still leading by one run. Both games on Saturday were seven inning games as Noe closed out the win.
In the second game, UCSD scored two in the first, and added solo runs in the second and third to lead 4-0. Both teams would score one run in the seventh inning to close out the scoring. Cantele went 3-for-4 with a homerun, while Garrett Imeson also went 3-for-4. Kehoe added two more hits, raising his average to .398. Kehoe is also on a team-best 14 game-hitting streak.
UCSD and GCU close out the series on Sunday with a first pitch at 12:00 p.m. in Phoenix.
