UCSD Blasts four Homeruns in 10-3 win against Cal State San Marcos

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team recorded 15 hits and four homeruns in a 10-3 triumph over Cal State San Marcos on Wednesday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field.  12 different Tritons recorded hits, including two apiece by Vance Albitz, Garrett Imeson and Nick Burke.  Chris Franco, Michael Scharbarth, Burke and Michael Benton all went yard in the game.  Derek Barham earned the win, allowing three runs in five innings.  Kirby St. John and Eric Abraham held the Cougars to no runs on one hit in four innings of relief.  With the win, UCSD improves to 3-2 while CSUSM drops to 3-5.

 

Barham struck out five batters in his five frames of work.  Kirby St. John pitched three innings of relief, allowing no hits and striking out four.  Three of UCSD's homeruns came in the eighth inning.  Scharbarth's came in his first collegiate at-bat.

 

With two outs in the UCSD first, Evan Domanic walked and Franco homered to rightfield for a 2-0 lead.

 

CSUSM's Tristan Gale led off the second inning with a homerun to straight away centerfield to bring the Cougars within 2-1.  Adam Ricciardulli doubled in the tying run later in the frame.

 

In the UCSD second, Evan Kehoe singled to lead off the inning and scored on Chris Hom's RBI double to put the Tritons on top 3-2.

 

Leading off the CSUSM third, Austin Way homered to rightfield to tie the game at 3-3.

 

In the UCSD fifth, Vance Albitz led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  With one out, Domanic singled, driving in the go-ahead run at 4-3 UCSD.  With two outs, Imeson singled to left, driving in a run for the 5-3 edge.

 

In the Triton sixth, Justin Bono led off with a double off the leftfield wall, just missing a homerun.  Nick Burke doubled to centerfield, driving in Bono for the 6-3 lead.  Albitz followed with an RBI single to push the lead to 7-3.

 

Michael Benton and Nick Burke led off the UCSD eighth with back-to-back homeruns, while Michael Scharbarth added a pinch-hit solo homerun in his first collegiate at-bat to round out the scoring.

 

UCSD is back in action on Friday afternoon when it hosts Grand Canyon in the first of a four-game set.  First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. at Triton Baseball Field.
