LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team led through eight innings, but Grand Canyon went through four Triton pitchers in the ninth inning, scoring six times for the come-from-behind victory 7-2. Vance Albitz had a go-ahead sac fly RBI in the seventh and Garrett Imeson went 3-for-3. Trevor Decker got a no-decision after pitching eight innings, scattering seven hits and striking out five. Decker gave up only one run in his duties. UCSD drops to 25-14, while GCU improves to 20-15. The Tritons are back in action on Friday, April 13 when they resume CCAA action for four games at Cal State Monterey Bay.
With two outs in the UCSD second, Bryan Silverman singled through the left side, putting the Tritons ahead 1-0.
In the GCU fifth, Craig Daniel beat out a potential double play ball, driving in an RBI, tying the game at 1-1.
Tim Mort led off the UCSD seventh with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on Jonathan Erickson's ground out. Vance Albitz then hit a sac fly to center, driving in the go-ahead run as UCSD led 2-1.
GCU threatened in the eighth, putting two on with one out, but Decker would retire the next two batters on flyballs, and UCSD remained in the lead.
In the GCU ninth, Giancarlo Silvestri led off with a double and the next GCU batter was hit. Matt Henne hit a pinch-hit single, tying the game at 2-2, and the runners advanced to second and third. Ryan Bristow hit a pinch hit RBI single to give the Antelopes the lead. GCU scored three more times to total six in the inning for the 7-2 win.
The Tritons will not return home for two weeks, as UCSD has back-to-back road trips the next two weekends at Cal State Monterey Bay and Chico State.
