LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team defeated Cal State Stanislaus 11-5 on Sunday, clinching a spot in the CCAA Baseball Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. UCSD used a seven-run fifth to break open a close game and cruise to the win. David Morehead, Chris Hom and Matt Cantele all homered, giving the Tritons 63 homeruns on the season, a new single-season mark at UCSD. With the win, UCSD improves to 33-18, 22-10 CCAA. The Tritons are back in action with a four-game set against Cal State L.A. on April 3-5. The games on Thursday and Friday will be held at Triton Baseball Field, with the first pitch of each game slated for 3:00 p.m. The teams will then play a doubleheader on Saturday at Cal State L.A. UCSD will honor its seniors in a short ceremony before Friday's first pitch.
In the UCSD first, Matt Lawson and Garrett Imeson led off with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Matt Cantele walked to load the bases with no outs. David Morehead picked-up an RBI on a fielders choice to give UCSD a 1-0 lead.
David Morehead led off the UCSD fourth with a homerun for the Tritons' second run. With two outs, Jonathan Erickson tripled to the right field corner for an RBI, driving in Chris Franco and UCSD led 3-0.
In the CSUS fifth, Casey Filkins led off with a double and Matt Miller hit an RBI single and it was 3-1. CSUS added another run in the inning and put runners on second and third before the final out was retired with the Warriors trailing 3-2.
UCSD got a run back in the fifth as Matt Cantele hit his 21st homerun of the season with two outs, and the Tritons went ahead 4-2. With still two outs, Morehead singled and Bryan Silverman was hit. Chris Franco then doubled for an RBI and later in the inning, Chris Hom hit a three-run homerun to break open the game at 10-2 UCSD.
In the CSUS sixth, Kyle Bonvechio hit a two-run homerun to make the score 10-4 UCSD.
In the UCSD eighth, Cantele walked with one out and Morehead doubled for an RBI, putting UCSD ahead 11-4.
CSUS added a run in the ninth on an RBI single by Dennis Wolfe.
