LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team swept a doubleheader against Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday at Triton Baseball Field. UCSD came from behind in the first game to win 5-2. After David Morehead doubled to tie the game, Chris Franco singled through the left side driving in two. Derek Barham closed the game for the Tritons, earning his eighth save of the season. The eight saves is a new UCSD single-season record. UCSD won the second game 8-1 as the Tritons scored early and often. Kirby St. John pitched a complete-game, earning the win to improve to 5-4 on the season. UCSD now needs one more win to clinch a spot in the CCAA Tournament. UCSD is now 32-18, 21-10 CCAA.
Game One
CSUS got on the board first in the third inning as Dennis Wolfe doubled to left center for an RBI. With no outs and runners on second and third, Chris Hom made a nice play on a ground ball to third, tagging the runner and firing to first for a double play. The Tritons escaped without further damage and trailed 1-0.
In the CSUS sixth with two outs, Tom Long singled to right field, driving in an RBI and CSUS took a 2-0 lead.
In the UCSD sixth, Chris Hom led off with a walk and advanced to second on Bryan Silverman's sac bunt. With two outs, Matt Lawson got the Tritons' second hit of the game, a double to left center, driving in Hom and cutting the lead down to 2-1. After CSUS intentionally walked Matt Cantele, and David Morehead doubled to left for an RBI, tying the game at 2-2. Chris Franco kept the rally going with a single through the left side, driving in Cantele and Morehead, and UCSD led 4-2.
Chris Franco led off the UCSD eighth with a solo homerun, his 11th of the year, giving the Tritons a 5-2 edge.
Derek Barham entered in the ninth and pitched a perfect frame for his eighth save of the season.
Game Two
Matt Lawson led off with a single and scored on Imeson's double for the 1-0 lead. Cantele then doubled to put runners on second and third. Morehead hit a sac fly RBI to give UCSD a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Bryan Silverman stole second and Cantele scored on a bad throw by the catcher, scoring UCSD's third run of the first.
In the UCSD second, Jonathan Erickson led off with a single and Chris Hom reached on a bunt. Erickson would come around to score, as the throw went past the first baseman. Hom scored on a wild pitch and UCSD led 5-0. Lawson doubled down the left field line and would score from third on Cantele's ground out to push the Tritons ahead 6-0.
In the UCSD fifth with two outs, Hom doubled to right center, driving in Roth, giving UCSD a 7-0 lead. Garrett Imeson then added an RBI single and the Tritons led 8-0 through five.
In the CSUS sixth, A.J. Valentine hit an RBI double to get the Warriors on the board.
UCSD and CSUS will conclude the four-game set on Sunday, with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
