PENSACOLA, Fla. ? The 13th-ranked UC San Diego men's tennis team won two matches on day two of the University of West Florida Tournament, defeating West Alabama in the morning by a 9-0 score before handing 14th-ranked BYU-Hawaii a 6-3 loss in the afternoon match. With the pair of wins the Tritons improve to 12-4 on the season.
The Tritons easily beat UWA in the morning match, winning all three doubles matches by scores of 8-5, 8-2 and 8-1, respectively, before winning five of the six singles matches in straight-sets. The lone exception on the singles side came at the No. 3 spot on the ladder where Kazumi Negishi, who normally plays at the No. 6 slot, defeated Mylan Anderson by scores of 6-7, 6-3 and 10-8.
In the nightcap, the Tritons picked up another crucial NCAA D-II West Region victory after taking two of the three doubles matches before capturing the No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches in straight sets. UCSD improves to 4-0 against West Region foes this season with the win.
Head coach Eric Steidlmayer's squad will return to action on Saturday, taking on 3rd-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State. The Tritons will also play 4th-ranked Valdosta State on Sunday. Both matches are being played as part of the UWF Tournament in Pensacola.
