ROHNERT PARK, Calif. ? The UC San Diego softball team split its Friday afternoon doubleheader with Sonoma State, winning game one by a 2-1 margin before losing the nightcap by a 3-2 score. With the split the Tritons' record goes to 9-9 overall and 4-2 in CCAA play while the Seawolves' record moves to 7-9 overall and 1-3 in league action.
In the first game of the day the Tritons got on the board first in the top of the fifth inning when sophomore Allison May homered to left field with two outs. It was May's first home of the season and the third of her career.
SSU answered right back in the bottom of the fifth as a leadoff double, followed by a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly plated the game-tying run.
The Tritons got what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning when freshman Nicole Saari doubled home senior Brittni Carino who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. Saari ended the game with two of UCSD's four hits.
Head coach Patti Gerckens got another solid outing from starting pitcher Melissa Ward who tossed her ninth complete game of the season, allowing only one run on five hits while walking two and striking out four. Ward improves to 6-3 on the season with the win while her ERA jumps up just a bit, increasing to 1.17 on the year.
UCSD fell behind early in the second game of the double dip as Sonoma State pushed across two runs in the first and one more in the second off Triton starter Lauren Chastain.
The Tritons would not quit, however scoring two runs in the top half of the seventh inning before senior Dallas Hernandez grounded out to end the game. Saari had an RBI triple to start the UCSD scoring in that inning. Sophomore Jenni Habib picked up an RBI single, scoring freshman Amanda Eliades, who pinch ran for Saari.
Chastain lasted only 2 2/3 innings as she allowed three earned runs on six hits to go along with two walks and one strikeout. She falls to 3-5 on the season with the loss. Nicole Fullerton threw the final 3 1/3 innings in the circle, allowing no runs and only two hits.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, playing another doubleheader on the Sonoma State campus. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
