LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego baseball team lost to Grand Canyon 13-7 on Tuesday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. The Antelopes scored nine times in the second inning to lead 9-1 and the outcome was never in doubt. Scott Clement led UCSD with his 4-for-5 with a homerun and three RBI. Three UCSD errors led to a total of five unearned runs. UCSD drops to 26-22 while Grand Canyon improves to 16-25.
Grand Canyon's Craig Daniel led off the game with a double to left center. With one out, Josh Tanner made a nice diving catch in short left field for the second out of the inning. The runner ended up stranded at second with no
damage done for the Tritons.
With two outs in the UCSD first, Scott Clement, David Morehead and David Gomez hit consecutive singles and UCSD was on the board at 1-0. UCSD would load the bases but a fielders' choice ended the frame.
GCU put runners on second and third with one out in the second. Brian Evans singled through the right side for an RBI to tie the game at 1-1. Josh Melum then doubled to right center, clearing the bases and GCU was ahead 3-1. With two outs, Tristian Blalock added an RBI single the 4-1 lead. GCU would continue to hit Triton pitching with the help of a UCSD error and scored nine
runs in the inning and led 9-1.
Trailing 11-1 in the fourth, Clement hit a three-run homerun to rightfield with two outs to make the score 11-4.UCSD added two more runs in the fifth inning to come within 11-6. GCU scored twice in the eighth to lead 13-6.
Damian Fante had an RBI single in the ninth to close out the scoring at 13-7 GCU.
UCSD is back in action on Friday with a conference game against San Francisco State at 2:00 p.m.
