LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego baseball team returned home and defeated Point Loma Nazarene 8-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. Jon Durket, making his first collegiate start, earned the win pitching five shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out six. UCSD hit three doubles and scored three times in the first inning and never looked back. David Gomez went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a homerun. Josh Tanner also had a multi-hit game for UCSD. The Tritons improve to 25-18 while the Sea Lions drop to 30-13.
Damian Fante led off the UCSD first with a walk and scored on Matt Cantele's double to the left center gap. David Morehead then doubled off the right field wall, scoring Cantele for the 2-0 lead. With two outs and none on, Garrett Imeson hit UCSD's third double of the frame. David Gomez then singled to left center, scoring Imeson and the Tritons lead 3-0 after one.
In the PLNU second, the Sea Lions had runners on second and third with one out. Jon Durket then struck out the next batter and retired the final out on a groundball to short.
With one out in the UCSD second, Josh Tanner and Fante hit back-to-back singles. The runners moved up to second and third with two outs on Cantele's groundout. Tanner then scored on a balk to give the Tritons a 4-0 lead through two.
In the UCSD third with two outs, David Gomez homered to right field and UCSD led 5-0.
In the Triton fifth, Scott Clement was hit-by-pitch and advanced to second on Garrett Imeson's sac bunt. Gomez then singled to put runners on the corners. With two outs, Bryan Silverman doubled off the top of the wall, scoring two and UCSD led 7-0 through five.
PLNU got on the board in the sixth as Chris Simpson hit a two-out homerun to right field.
In the PLNU seventh, the Sea Lions loaded the bases with no outs on a hit batsman and two singles. Kellen Walker then hit a sac fly to right field to bring PLNU within 7-2. The next two PLNU batters were retired on strikeouts as UCSD remained ahead.
Scott Clement had an RBI single in the eighth for UCSD's final run.
Jon Durket earned the win pitching five innings, allowing four hits, walking one, no runs and struck out six. Michael Kearney, Ryan Leake and Todd Gimenez finished up the game.
UCSD is back in action with a four-game CCAA series beginning at Cal State Dominguez Hills on April 20. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. in Carson.
