No. 24 UCSD Sweeps No. 4 Chico State, Moves into First-Place Tie

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 24th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team took 3-of-4 after sweeping 4th-ranked Chico State on Monday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field.  UCSD won the first game 15-4 as Jose Navarro (5-2) earned the win.  UCSD won game two 4-1 behind a strong pitching outing by Ryan Leake (2-0).  There were plenty of offensive stars Monday for the Tritons, but none was bigger than Scott Clement.  Clement went a combined 6-for-8 with three homeruns, two doubles and seven RBI.  Also in the first game, Garrett Imeson had four hits, Matt Cantele had three hits, including his fifth homerun and Josh Tanner had two hits and three RBI.  With the wins, UCSD moves into a first-place tie with Sonoma State and Cal Poly Pomona.  UCSD is 19-12, 10-6 CCAA while the Wildcats drop to 21-9, 8-6 CCAA.

Game One

John Roth led off the second inning with a walk and advanced to second on Matt Cantele's single.  The runners moved up to second and third with no outs on a wild pitch.  Tim Mort then singled through the right side, scoring Roth and putting runners on the corners.  With one out, Josh Tanner doubled to right center, scoring Cantele for the 2-0 lead.  Garrett Imeson then drove in two runs with a single to left center as the Tritons led 4-0 in the second.

UCSD added another run in the third as Scott Clement blasted a homerun to right center to lead 5-0.  With one out, Roth singled and Cantele doubled to put runners on second and third.  Mort was then intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a force.  Jonathan Erickson then grounded out, but a run scored and runners advanced to second and third.  Tanner then singled up the middle to drive in Cantele and Mort as the Tritons went in front 8-0.

Cantele hit a solo homerun in the fourth with two outs as the Tritons went on top 9-0.

In the UCSD sixth, Damian Fante tripled and Morehead was hit-by-pitch.  Clement then homered again to right field, a three-run shot to put the Tritons up 12-0.

David Morehead had an RBI double and Clement had an RBI single in the seventh.

Devin Incerti added a pinch-hit RBI single as the Tritons went ahead 15-0.

The Wildcats finally got to Navarro in the ninth, loading the bases and Trevor Weedon hitting a grand slam to put CSUC on the board at 15-4.  Nick San Filippo came on to record the final out.

Game Two

Chico State put runners on second and third in the first inning, but Todd Gimenez struck out the next Wildcat batter to end the threat.

Clement led off the second inning with a double to centerfield.  With one out, Cantele was intentionally walked to set up the force.  Mort then singled to right field, scoring Clement for the first run of the game.  With runners on the corners, and one out, the Tritons were unable to do further damage and led 1-0 after two innings.

Imeson led off the third inning with a single to center.  Fante was safe on a fielder's choice as Imeson was thrown out at second for the first out.  With two outs, Clement hit his second consecutive double off the batter's eye in deep center, driving in Fante for the 2-0 lead.

CSUC put runners on second and third in the fourth on singles by Chris Sweeney and James McCarthy.  Joey Burke hit a single through the left side with two outs, scoring Sweeney and cutting the lead down to 2-1 UCSD.  Gimenez then struck out the next CSUC batter to strand runners on the corners with UCSD still leading in the fourth.

CSUC put runners on the corners with two outs in the fifth aided by a UCSD throwing error on a pickoff attempt.  Ryan Leake came on to record the final out of the inning, stranding the runners and keeping UCSD in front 2-1.

Tanner led off the Triton fifth with a single through the right side and advanced to second on Imeson's sac bunt.  With two outs, David Morehead singled to center, scoring Tanner and pushing UCSD ahead 3-1.

Clement led off the sixth with a homerun to right field, his third homerun of the doubleheader as UCSD went ahead 4-1.

In the seventh, CSUC put a runner on with one out.  Josh Tanner made a nice play deep in the hole at short to get the second out while the CSUC runner advanced to second.  The next batter flew out to right, ending the game in favor of UCSD.  Leake earned the win going the final 2.1 innings allowing one hit and allowing no runs.
