PHOENIX, Ariz. - The 21st-ranked UC San Diego baseball team split a doubleheader in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Grand Canyon. The Tritons rebounded from losing the first game 6-5. The Tritons led 5-1 before the Antelopes scored four times in the seventh and the go-ahead run in the eighth. Damian Fante had a homerun as one of his two hits while David Morehead and Garrett Imeson had three hits apiece. Byron Grubman pitched a complete game three-hitter as the Tritons won game two 5-1. Imeson, David Gomez and John Roth had two hits each. The Tritons improve to 14-10 on the season.
The ?Lopes played catch up as Tristan Blalock drove in the go ahead run in the bottom of the 8 th inning to pace GCU to the 6-5 victory over UC San Diego. The Tritons jumped out to a 5-1 lead capped by Damian Fante's inside the park home run that was hit off the batter's eye in center field that bounced back toward the infield.
GCU scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning paced by 2-run double by Brian Smith. In the bottom of the 8 th inning Giancarlo Silvestri got things started with a double and advanced to third on a Jacob Hanna sacrifice bunt. With Hanna on third Blalock drove a 2-2 offering into left field giving GCU the 6-5 lead. Matt Michael came on to collect his 5 th save of the season but not with out some excitement. UC San Diego attempted to tie the game as Brian Trump doubled than advanced to third. Trump than attempted to steal home but was tagged out on the pitch by Blalock to secure the victory.
Patrick Lawler came on in the 8 th inning picked up his first win of the season moving to (1-4) on the season. Trevor Decker (2-2) picked up the loss.
Game two saw the Tritons string four runs on four hits in the third inning to set the tone on the way to a 5-1 victory over the ?Lopes. Garrett Imeson, David Gomez and John Roth paced the win as they collected 2 hits apiece.
?Lopes starter Josiah Ziegler (0-4) got tagged for 4 runs (all earned) on 5 hits as he dropped his 4 th loss of the season. Byron Grubman (2-3) picked up the win for the Tritons. Smith led GCU in the loss with 2 of the team's 3 hits and drove in the lone run.
