RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UC Riverside Highlanders improved to 2-1 on the season with a sound 6-1 win over the visiting University of California, San Diego at the Student Recreation Center Tennis Courts Saturday. The loss drops the Tritons to 0-1 on the year.
The Highlanders started the day off well as they took the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches to take that point. At No. 1 Mark Contreras and Christian Frick defeated Brent Molden and Eric Rubens, 8-5, while at No. 3, Justin Montgomery and Bobby Tam defeated Kazumi Negishi and Ramesh Thondapu, 8-4.
With the doubles point in hand, the Highlanders put the match away with solid singles play. No. 1 Norman Tam, No. 2 Mark Contreras, No. 4 Joe Cartledge, No. 5 Bobby Tam and No. 6 Christian Frick all won in singles play for the Highlanders.
UCSD returns to action on Sunday, playing at cross-town rival San Diego State at 2:30 p.m. on the SDSU campus.
