WALNUT CREEK, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's soccer team placed six players on the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association teams, two of which were first team honorees while three others were second team with one on the honorable mention squad. The teams were released by the league office on Friday morning.
Seniors Matt Davey and Edward Ruhland were awarded first team honors. Davey led the team in scoring with 10 goals and six assists. Five of his goals were game-winners. Ruhland led the CCAA in with his 0.59 goals-against average, making 50 saves and posting six shutouts in his 1,534 minutes of play between the pipes. The selection for Davey is his fourth all-league honor while Ruhland gets selected for the first time in his career.
A pair of defenders and a forward were on the second team from UCSD. Freshman Devon Cook and junior Matt Horne helped anchor a stingy Triton defense that posted 10 shutouts in its 17 regular season contests. Senior forward Jon Krupansky was named to the second team after tallying two goals and four assists on the year.
Junior Chase Douglas earns his second-straight All-CCAA Honorable Mention honors. Douglas started all 17 games at midfield for UCSD, notching an assist on the season. Joining him on the honorable mention squad were junior Dustin Tannenhaus and senior Kevin Murray. Murray was an all-CCAA performer last year while this year's honor for Tannenhaus is the first of his career.
Morten Marthinsen of Cal State L.A. was named the league's Most Valuable Player while his teammate Kyle Hewitt was named the CCAA Freshman of the Year. The league's Coach of the Year is still to be determined and will be decided following the league tournament that is being played in Turlock, Calif. on Friday, November 4 through Sunday, November 6. UCSD will play Sonoma State in the semifinals on Friday at 11 a.m.
